Baja Pet Rescue

Baja Pet Rescue is a volunteer group in La Ventana, the kitesurfing village on La Ventana Bay southeast of La Paz. Danielle Gee founded it with a group of friends in 2020 as a foster-based dog rescue, and it has rescued over 300 dogs. Since 2025 its main work is donor-funded spay and neuter days for La Ventana and the small communities around it, with a goal of 1,000 sterilizations.

What Baja Pet Rescue Does

Spay & neuter days

Up to 40 animals per campaign, aiming for two campaigns a month, with Veterinaria Animalejos doing the surgeries. Pets also get dewormer, flea and tick treatment, collars and leashes.

Campaigns in nearby towns

In 2025: El Triunfo in May, Los Planes in June (38 animals in one day, its largest), Agua Amarga in November. By June 2025 it had done 336 spays that year.

Dog rescue and fostering

Rescued dogs live with foster families until adopted. Since the 2024 shift to spay and neuter, the foster program is smaller. It takes dogs only, not cats.

Adoptions abroad

Dogs go to homes in Baja, western Canada and the US: 136 since November 2022. Adopters in Canada or the US pay for transport, about $100–250 USD by air or car.

How to Help

  • Sponsor a spay, or a whole spay day: each surgery costs about $32 USD on average
  • Volunteer at a spay day (every other Sunday, 8 AM to 4 PM): watching animals in recovery and helping with sign-in
  • Donate supplies: dewormer, flea and tick treatments, collars, leashes, syringes and dissolving sutures
  • Adopt: create an account on bajapetrescue.com, complete the adopter profile and apply for a dog

Donating

Baja Pet Rescue became a US-registered nonprofit in October 2025, so US donations can be tax-deductible. It takes donations through a Zeffy form for spay campaigns, or by PayPal or Wise to bajapetrescue@gmail.com.

Where It Works

Baja Pet Rescue has no street address. The pins mark the towns: La Ventana, where it is based, and two towns where it held spay days in 2025. La Ventana is about 47 km from La Paz by road, roughly 45 minutes (SICT gives 50 km and 45 minutes to El Sargento, 3 km further up the same road).
