Coffee Star

La Paz-born coffee brand since 2003 — cafés across the city and a drive-thru on Camino Real, open until 10 PM or later

Coffee Star is a coffee chain founded in La Paz, and one of the best-known names in the city's coffee scene. It has cafés across the city: the original on Calle Isabel La Católica in Los Olivos, one on Boulevard Pino Pallas in Villas del Encanto, one in Colonia Emiliano Zapata, a drive-thru on Calzada El Camino Real, and newer cafés under the Coffee Star Signature name, downtown on the corner of Márquez de León and Revolución and in Plaza Náutica on Calzada Abasolo. Every branch is listed with its own phone and hours.

The menu runs from espresso drinks and iced coffees to smoothies, baked goods and desserts. The cafés are known as a comfortable place to sit and work, and the chain has been adding drive-thru windows at branches where the site allows.

The branches with published hours are open every day until at least 10 at night. The Camino Real drive-thru and Pino Pallas open earliest, at 6 in the morning, and Pino Pallas stays open until 11 on Friday and Saturday. The downtown Signature is pet friendly, so it works for a coffee stop while walking the dog around the Centro.

From a trip to Veracruz to a peninsula chain

Coffee Star began as an idea in 2003, when its founder, Crispín Ruelas, travelled from his home in La Paz to Veracruz to learn about coffee. He wanted to open a café but knew nothing about coffee yet.

Twenty years on, the chain had 17 branches at the end of 2023, most of them in La Paz and Ensenada, and has added drive-thru service where its locations allow.
