CFE La Paz
Official name: Comisión Federal de Electricidad (CFE)
Mexico's federal electricity company: contracts, bills and outages, plus how to stay off the DAC rate
Summer electricity is the biggest budget surprise in La Paz. Going over the 850 kWh/month Tarifa 1C average puts you on DAC, where bills can triple, and DAC lasts a full rolling 12 months.
Ask your landlord or seller for recent CFE bills before you sign, and check which tariff the account is on.
Pay online with Mi CFE, at a CFEmático kiosk or at the office. Keep your service number (número de servicio) from the bill handy for all of them.
CFE (Comisión Federal de Electricidad) is the federal utility that supplies electricity to every home and business in La Paz. Its customer service and administration office is downtown at Melchor Ocampo and Ignacio Ramírez in the Zona Central, with a CFEmático payment kiosk on the same block.
La Paz is on CFE Tarifa 1C, which provides a subsidized usage threshold of 850 kWh/month average. If your 12-month rolling average exceeds this, CFE reclassifies your account to DAC (Doméstica de Alto Consumo), the high-consumption tier where government subsidies disappear and your per-kWh cost can triple. Once classified as DAC, your account stays there for the full rolling 12-month period even if you reduce consumption.
Summer air conditioning is what pushes most households toward DAC. Inverter-type (energy-efficient) AC units, timers instead of running the AC all day, and care during the June–October cooling season keep most homes under the threshold. Some residents add solar panels to manage long-term electricity costs.

Starting New Service
You can contract new electricity service online through CFE's Contratación en línea (cfecontigocontratos.cfe.mx) or at the customer service office at Melchor Ocampo and Ignacio Ramírez.
Bring an official ID (passport for foreign nationals), proof of ownership or a lease for the property, and the property's address. Ask CFE for the current requirements before you go.
When you buy or rent a home, check the last few bills first. If the account is already on DAC, it stays there until the 12-month rolling average comes back under 850 kWh/month.
