Sears has two department stores in La Paz: one in Plaza Forjadores, on Boulevard Forjadores de Sudcalifornia, and the older downtown store on Avenida 16 de Septiembre in the Zona Centro. Sears México is run by Grupo Sanborns and is separate from the U.S. chain (see below); its stores remain a fixture of Mexican shopping centres.

The store sells clothing, shoes, cosmetics, home goods, appliances and electronics, and is a common alternative to Liverpool for large purchases — compare prices between the two, and check for monthly-instalment offers with Sears or bank cards.

Why Sears is still everywhere in Mexico

Visitors from the U.S. are often surprised to find Sears thriving here. Sears, Roebuck and Co. filed for bankruptcy in 2018, and by late 2025 only about five Sears stores were left in the whole United States.

Sears México took a different path. The U.S. company opened its first Mexican store in 1947, in Colonia Roma, Mexico City, and in 1997 sold 85% of the Mexican business to Carlos Slim's Grupo Carso. Carso has since taken full ownership, and the chain is run by its retail arm, Grupo Sanborns, separately from the U.S. company.

Today Sears México operates more than 90 department stores across the country, including both of the La Paz stores on this page.
