Coppel is a Mexican department store chain, founded in 1941 and based in Culiacán, Sinaloa. It sells clothing, shoes, furniture, appliances, electronics and cellphones, and is known for its in-store credit, with purchases paid off in twice-monthly instalments.

Coppel has six stores in La Paz. The one shown here, Coppel Plaza La Paz, is in Plaza Forjadores on Boulevard Forjadores de Sudcalifornia. The others are two downtown stores (Revolución and Canadá 16 de Septiembre), Plaza Alameda on Calzada Forjadores, Olachea, in Plaza Paseo La Paz, and a smaller "Digital" store in Villas del Encanto; they are listed alongside, with phones and hours where we have them.

How Coppel grew from one shop in Sinaloa

Coppel's story starts in 1941, when Luis Coppel Rivas and his son Enrique Coppel Tamayo moved from Mazatlán to Culiacán, Sinaloa, and opened a small shop called El Regalo that sold radios and watches. After the Second World War, when customers had little cash, they began selling furniture on credit in small regular payments. Customers called the shop by the family name, and Coppel became the store's name.

Credit stayed at the heart of the business. In 2002 Coppel bought the Canadá shoe chain, which is why some stores, including the one on 16 de Septiembre, still carry the "Coppel Canadá" name. In 2007 it won approval to open its own bank, BanCoppel, and it also runs a retirement-savings fund, Afore Coppel; Coppel's store finder lists BanCoppel at its La Paz stores.

Still based in Culiacán, Coppel had almost 1,900 stores in more than 600 Mexican cities and towns at the start of 2025, and planned to open 100 more that year.
