Raíz de Fondo
Community gardens in La Paz
Raíz de Fondo began when a small group of volunteers acquired a derelict lot in central La Paz to plant a community garden. It now runs two community gardens, garden and nutrition programs in local schools, healthy cooking workshops, and a food rescue program that passes surplus produce from local growers to families who need it. Anyone can join a workshop, adopt a garden plot or volunteer.
The Gardens
Huerto Legaspy
Legaspy 443, between Aquiles Serdán and Guillermo Prieto, Col. Centro
In the Centro. Neighbors can adopt a plot and learn sustainable growing methods. It also holds the office, a seed library and the Tienda del Jardín.
Huerto Guamúchil
Colegio Militar s/n, between Ignacio Ramírez and Altamirano, Col. Esterito
Home of the cooking workshops, held in an open-air kitchen under a palm-thatch roof, and of many of the garden workshops.
Programs
Food rescue
Volunteers collect surplus fresh food donated by local producers and turn it into hot meals at community centers and food baskets for people facing food insecurity. In three years: more than 650 tonnes rescued, for more than 11,500 people.
Cooking workshops
Healthy cooking classes open to everyone, beginners included, at Huerto Guamúchil. 2026 classes run about $220 MXN, with themes from ceviche to Thai, Indian and Arabic cooking.
School gardens
Garden and healthy-eating lessons for preschool through university students, teachers and parents, in line with the SEP curriculum. School groups can visit the gardens.
Workshops and events
Garden workshops (starting a vegetable garden, composting), seed swaps and film nights at the gardens. Free guides, recipe books and teaching materials on the website.
Tienda del Jardín
The shop at Huerto Legaspy sells gardening supplies (drip irrigation, compost, worm castings, heirloom seeds) and some kitchen and pantry goods.
Dates and prices are on the Agenda page at raizdefondo.org; sign up for cooking workshops by WhatsApp at 612 233 8764.
