Los Cabos Airport (SJD)

Aeropuerto Internacional de Los Cabos

SJD isn't in La Paz — it's in Los Cabos, about 195 km south, a 2 to 2½ hour drive. But it's the closest airport with broad nonstop service to the US and Canada, so it's often the easiest way to reach La Paz when there's no convenient flight into La Paz Airport (LAP).

Why Fly into SJD?

Los Cabos is one of Mexico's best-connected leisure airports. For the 2026–27 winter season it has nonstop flights to 33 US airports, 11 in Canada and 17 in Mexico, plus Frankfurt (Condor) and Panama City (Copa). La Paz's own airport has one US route (Los Angeles). If you live near a US or Canadian hub — or almost anywhere served by Southwest, Alaska, WestJet or the big three US carriers — there's probably a nonstop to SJD.

Service peaks in winter. In December 2026 Los Cabos has about 643 scheduled weekly flights (368 to the US, 62 to Canada), against 346 in September, when many Canadian and Midwest routes don't run.

Getting from SJD to La Paz

The fastest route is Highway 19 up the Pacific side through Todos Santos, about 195 km. The eastern route on Highway 1 through Los Barriles is shorter (about 180 km) but slower, with more curves and small towns. Allow at least an hour to clear immigration and customs at SJD before you start the drive.

Rental Car

  • Drive time: 2 to 2½ hours via Highway 19 and Todos Santos
  • Gives you a car for day trips from La Paz and an easy stop in Todos Santos on the way

Private Transfer

About $100–200+ USD one way, depending on vehicle size (vans take up to 9–10 passengers). The quickest door-to-door option: 2 to 2½ hours. Book ahead and confirm where your driver will meet you outside arrivals.

Shared Shuttle

About $60 USD per person one way. Expect 3+ hours with stops, often including Todos Santos.

The Terminals

SJD is run by Grupo Aeroportuario del Pacífico (GAP). Terminal 1 handles domestic flights and some international ones; Terminal 2 handles international flights only. Check your boarding pass or the airline for your terminal, especially on the way home. The airport is about 11 km from San José del Cabo.

SJD or LAP?

If there's a reasonable flight into La Paz Airport (LAP), take it: you land 20–30 minutes from downtown instead of 2+ hours away. Fly into SJD when it saves you a connection or a lot of money, when your home airport only has nonstops to Los Cabos, or when you're combining La Paz with a few nights in Los Cabos. See the LAP vs. SJD comparison.
